Car Accident

On the way to the Anime North 2011 conference today, we saw a really bad accident on HWY 401. I’ve only seen something like this in movies, not in real life. I haven’t seen any reports yet on the news. Hope there is no one injured.

Anime North 2011 Conference

Before today, I wasn’t really interested in going to the Anime North conference as I was told it’s just some people dressing like weirdos on the street. But I am glad I did tag along with our friend, even though just taking some pictures outside the Toronto Congress Center building. Not saying I’m too old, but I guess I need to be more open to the next generation. These people (most of them are teenagers) are fun to be with. Some costumes are to mimic characters in animation movies and comic books; some (for example, the “Record Player”) are made from their own creative minds. These people are not shy to be photographed, as long as you ask nicely first. I guess it makes them proud and they would have no problem being shown off on the web. The one thing you shouldn’t ask is, “Who are you?” or “What is your character?” That will make you sound ignorant and dumb. You are “supposed” to know before being in this crowd.

Food Photography for Dancap Catering Inc

(As part of the consolidation of my pictures on the ‘Net, I’m transferring this set of photos from my Flickr page, plus a few more. The reason of not using Flickr as my main photo site is explained here.)

The story: Dancap Catering is one of the divisions of the company I’m currently working for. It not only provides prix fixe dinner for show patrons of it’s sister company, Dancap Producitons, but also provides catering service for any events. In an effort of marketing the service, the company needed some food photos taken of what they can offer and I volunteered.

Macro Photography

Since we’ve been on the topic of flowers, I might as well give you my take on macro photography now. This article is targeted to amateur and junior level photographers. I’m mostly referring to flowers here. But macro photography can be about anything small. Insects, for instance, are also popular subjects. (Feel free to click on each picture to see a larger version.)

Blossom

Today is probably the only day that doesn’t rain in these two weeks. When we got home after work, we are so excited to see the tulips and narcissus all beautifully unfolded their petals. Here they are. Enjoy.

Our Garden

Living in Canada is not easy. Some people can afford to buy a house but can’t keep up with their mortgage payment. Even if they can, they have to use a large portion of their income to do so. In China, these kind of folks are called “房奴”, meaning “slave to the house”, because that’s what they are “working for”.

Well, me and my wife are “slave to our house” too, but we are different kind of slaves. We bought the house, finished the renovation, and fortunately the monthly mortgage payment is not a big burden. Yet still, we are stranded — by our garden.

Believe me, keeping a garden in both front and back yard nice and tidy and beautifully looking is no small matter and not suitable for faint hearts. Every year, we spent lots of time and efforts in our yards, not just mowing the lawn and spreading glass seeds in sprint and fall, but also planted lots of roses and some trees and other flowers. I’m not saying our garden is the most beautiful one in our neighborhood. It is not at all. But sometimes when people pass by and say, “nice flowers” or the neighbor says to you over the fence, “those are beautiful roses”, that’s all it takes for us to keep on.
