This site is not really about me, but the photos I took on vacations or other occasions. I don’t really need a domain registered solely to myself and don’t like to spend too much time on designing web pages. The original idea of having a small personal space was to share my vacation photos to my families and friends, particular those living in China. I have tried Google Picasa Web Albums but later found out that China is blocking it. Flickr is great for sharing photos but I always feel something is missing — the flexibility to write articles, i.e. blogging, and the limitation of 200 images (with the free account). With that said, I still review some groups discussions (1, 2, 3) from time to time to learn photography techniques. What about Facebook? I do have an account. But China is currently blocking it too. So it’s a no-go for me.
I heard of WordPress in the tech news every once awhile but had never learned what it was for. Not until I came across it again on Neil’s web site which by the way is a fantastic place to learn flash photography. The great things about WordPress are it comes with many templates to choose from so that I can concentrate on the contents instead of worrying about layouts, color schemes of the pages, and it has more than enough widgets for me to start with. The free account provides 3GB space which means I can potentially store 10,000 images (at 1024×680 resolution that’s suitable for web browsers; higher resolution images are available upon requests for a fee, 😉 just kidding).
So here it is, this site will become my personal presence on the web, to share not just photos, but also stories behind them, and sometimes the techniques as well. Since I got my first DSLR camera (Nikon D5000) in September 2009, I felt in love with photography and hope I’ve improved along the way. Drop me a note whether or not you like my photography. Critics are welcome as I’m learning every day.
